The Legislature’s Portfolio Committee on Community Safety will on Thursday, 31 May 2018, host a roundtable discussion on the ‘Effectiveness of the Gauteng Department of Community Safety in Reducing Road Crashes and Fatalities’.
This forms part of the Committee’s Focus Intervention Study (FIS) which investigates the effectiveness of the Department in relation to its duty to manage traffic, as well as road accidents and fatalities in the Province.
The Department is charged with the mandate to strengthen traffic law enforcement and contribute towards the reduction of road fatalities in Gauteng. It also has the responsibility to adjudicate road traffic offenses and enhance road user knowledge, skills and attitudes through promoting road safety.
In 2017 Gauteng recorded 2398 fatal car crashes as compared to 2385 in 2016. This represents an increase of 0.5% – a cause for concern as Gauteng is among the three Provinces that recorded an increase.
The roundtable discussion therefore seeks to establish challenges experienced by the Department in carrying out its mandate, as well as devise strategies to address them.
